  Glossary

  Alt Tag
Alt tag is the alternative text that the browser displays when the visitor to your site cannot see the pictures present in a Web page. Using alt tags containing keywords can improve the search engine ranking of the page for those keywords.

  Authentication
In web terms, authentication is the method used to confirm or verify the identity of a user, program or computer on the web.

  Banner ads
Graphic advertisements that you see at the top, bottom, left and right of many Web pages. This is mostly a paid form of advertising.

  BMP (Bitmap)
A format for storing images. When you have a image in Bitmap format, the name of the image will have a .bmp at the end.

  Browser
Software that makes access to the World Wide Web possible. The most frequently used browsers are Internet Explorer, Netscape and Firefox. A browser allows you to view, download, upload and access documents on internet sites and enables you to navigate from one site to another.

  Cache

Your browser (as discussed in previous point) stores every HTML page and graphic on your hard disk. The next time you need to view the same page, it uses the cached version, which is much faster as it does not need to be downloaded from the internet again.

Therefore, usually when changes have been made to your website, we will ask you to press Ctrl + F5, meaning that your browser should refresh the cached pages.

  Cloaking

The process by which your Web site can display different pages under different circumstances. Mainly used to show optimized pages to the search engines (google, Yahoo etc) and a different page to visitors. Search Engines got so clever, that most of them will penalize your site if they discover that it is using cloaking.

At iCreations, we never use cloaking.

  Domain name

Domain name is the exclusive name given to every website. It is used to locate a website over the Internet.

An example of a domain name is www.icreations.co.za A domain name consists of three different parts with each separated by a dot. These are host server name (www), the unique name of the website (icreations) and the third defining the purpose/type of the website (.co.za - meaning a company in South Africa).

For the last part of the domain name, you also get .com (commercial), .gov (government) and .net (network)

  Dynamic content
Information in Web pages which changes automatically, based on database or user information. Dynamic content is also updated frequently and is fresh and relevant. Search engines will index dynamic content in the same way as static content unless the URL includes a ? mark.

  e-Commerce
Electronic commerce (also known as ebusiness.). It refers to the buying and selling of products and services via the Internet.

  Encryption
The transformation of data to ensure that it illegible to everyone except for the intended recipient. The recipient of the encrypted data must have the proper decryption key to decode the message.

FAQ's Well known abbreviation for "Frequently Asked Questions".

  Firewall
Software that works as a security filter that can restrict types of network communication. Most often used between an individual computer (or a LAN) and the Internet.

  Flash
(Macromedia)

A technology that allows for animation or moving graphics on a website. For visitors to your site that does not have broadband internet, this may mean slow download times. Also, when your website is fully flash, there will be no content for search engines to read and index your site.

iCreations does not advise any client on a full flash website, but only to incorporate flash elements.

  FTP
Abbreviation for "File Transfer Protocol". FTP is for uploading and downloading files over the Internet. FTP utilities are used to transfer Web pages and other files from your hard drive to a remote Web server.
