  Opt-in email

Certain websites ask visitors to subscribe to a newsletter. When they fill in and submit their details (such as email address), they are said to be opting-in. Opt-in email marketing is when a newsletter is sent out to people who have requested to receive it.
 
       
  Pay-Per-Click
Pay-per-click is a low cost advertising method. Search Engines (i.e Google) offers this where you stipulate a certain amount that you are willing to pay for a search engine to list your website per specific keyword. You are then paying for each click from that search engine to your site.
 
       
  Real-time
authorization
An online credit card purchase is “approved” in real time (actual time), as the customer completes the checkout process online. If the authorization is positive, the order will proceed. If not, the customer will receive an error message, and the order will be suspended.
 
       
  RGB
Red Green Blue. A combination of the three primary colors that can represent a full color spectrum.

Search engines help a user find desired information or resources by searching for keywords that the user indicates. It is a “program” that indexes Web sites according to words, phrases and subject matters. Examples of search engines are Google, Yahoo, AltaVista etc.
 
       
  SEO
Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of trying to ensure that a specific website obtains a high rank in search engines.
 
       
  SSL
Secure Sockets Layer. A transaction security standard that enables commercial transactions to take place over the Internet. SSL delivers server authentication, data encryption, and message integrity.
 
       
  Shopping cart
A section of an online store where a customer can order products and provide credit card information.
 
       
  Spamming
There are 2 contexts of spamming. Firstly, it is the well-known sending of unsolicited bulk email. Secondly, spamming also refers to a “technique” which causes degradation in the quality of results produced by the search engines i.e excessive repetition of a keyword in a specific website/webpage, optimizing a page for a keyword which is not related to the contents of the Website, using invisible text, etc. Search engines will penalize a page which uses spamming.
 
       
  Spider
Software that visits Websites and index the pages present in those sites. Search engines use spiders to build up their databases.
 
       
  Streaming
On the Web, generally you need to wait for a file to download before you can see it. The same applies for music - you wait for the file to download, then you can listen to it. Currently streaming plug-ins are available, like RealAudio, which plays the music as it downloads!
 
       
  URL
The Uniform Resource Locator is used to specify the address of Web sites and Web pages.
 
       
  W3C
World Wide Web Consortium is the organization accountable for managing standards for the WWW.
